Improve GPA The first, and perhaps the most obvious reason to start working with a private tutor is to improve grades in each class. If students got some bad news when they received their grade sheet this winter, they could work with their tutor to figure out what went wrong and how they can get back on track. A student might need a specific subject matter explained to them, or they may just need to work on improving study habits. When students start getting extra help with difficult concepts their grades start to improve, and this eventually raises their entire GPA. This might be especially important for students in their sophomore through senior years who are relying on their GPA to help them get into college. 2. Instill a love of learning Private tutors can also help instill a love of learning in students who find themselves disinterested in school work at this point in the year. Theres lots of dry subject matter that students need to tackle, and tutors can help make it more fun and exciting. They can also help explain the practical applications of assignments that may not have an obvious point. Students may also have lost their love of learning because their stress levels are too high or they feel overwhelmed with the amount of homework they have. Working with a tutor can help make study habits more efficient and help students get things done quicker (READ: Fullerton Math Tutor Tips: How to Make Students Feel Great About Math). 3. Lower frustration levels Working one-on-one with an expert can also substantially lower a students frustration level. Sometimes kids get to a point where they just cant take anymore, and they turn away from assignments. Tutors can look through a studentâs assignments to see what went wrong and what, in particular, the student needs to improve. Knowing what went wrong is half the battle and can make a students life a lot easier. 4. Prepare for final exams this Spring Students who received final test grades that were not as good as they were hoping for can also work with a tutor so they can do better on their exams in the spring. Tutors can look over studentsâ exams, if available or talk with a student over a period and learn about their learning style and preferences to figure out how to help them improve. There are several reasons why.To begin with, it's true that there are several English-speaking countries around the world. Each of them has its own standards for speaking, writing, and even writing and speaking in English. There is a little bit of difference between the language in each country. In addition, some countries have their own standards that vary from country to country. For example, the Germans tend to be highly critical of how you speak English. People who live in Germany learn French at a very early age as their second language. Also, learning the French language also helps me when I travel abroad. Some people are afraid of speaking and writing in their native language. However, when I am doing a study abroad, I always want to learn the language and try to improve my skills in order to better understand the culture of the place. The main reason why I am writing this article is that I believe that you, the reader, should also be able to read and speak in the English language. Book Musicals
Book Musicals Have You Ever Seen a Book Musical? ChaptersMusicals that Started as NovelsWhat Is a Book Musical, Exactly? The Most Popular Book MusicalsWeâre not talking a Disney Fantasia-esque tale wherein books, as the brooms in that film, take on a life of their own, flapping about the stage, unbidden.Like the aforementioned brooms, such a phenomenon would be rather frightening, donât you think?A book musical is a type of musical theatre with specific criteria â" how many songs and how they are woven into the story; when the musical elements are introduced, and so on.Donât fret, weâll go into more detail in the meat of the topic; this is just the introduction! Many people assume that a book musical is a stage show that includes music, whose inspiration or, indeed, the whole story is lifted from a previously published book.In some cases, that is exactly how a musical comes to be: somebody reads a great book, visualises soaring vocals and lively dance steps and, next thing you know, Broadwayâs next big show is going on tou r!Or West Endâs next big show⦠UK composers have turned out more than a few internationally renown musicals, too.Although such a scenario involves books and musicals, the shows that come about that way are not all book musicals. In fact, letâs start the discussion off by going over a few books that became musicals. Later, weâll divulge the criteria that make for a book musical.Time to get your literary thinking caps on! Printed stories came much later.Daniel Defoe gave us Moll Flanders and Robinson Crusoe in the early 18th Century.By the time those works were published, opera had been a form of entertainment in Italy for more than 100 years and was working its way across Europe. The French writer Molière was instrumental in the evolution of musical theatre. He envisioned his more farcical tales as stage shows and, teaming up with musician Jean-Baptiste Lully, produced a string of musical comedies. Those shows had a great influence on the short season of English opera and they illustrate our point: back then and today, the inspiration for a hit musical could come from anywhere. For instance, the Tony Awar d-winning Rent draws directly on Pucciniâs La Bohème for inspiration; it even parallels some of the older operaâs storylines.Itâs natural for playwrights to draw on past literary work, perhaps updating the story to reflect modern times.Among popular musicals that started as books are:My Fair Lady, from George Bernard Shawâs PygmalionThe King and I, from Margaret Landonâs Anna and the King of SiamThe Sound of Music from The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta von TrappLes Misérables by Victor HugoMary Poppins by P.L.TraversEvita, from the book Evita: The Woman with the Whip by Mary MainCharlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald DahlThe Phantom of the Opera by Gaston LerouxAndrew Lloyd Webber, a prolific composer of musical scores for stage and screen often draws inspiration from literature. Besides The Phantom, he has brought Cats to life (based on a book by T.S. Elliot) and Jesus Christ Superstar, based on the Gospels. All of these stories were firmly estab lished as books before they were made into shows; other types of books can also serve as inspiration for a Broadway musical. Think Hamilton, inspired by a biography of that American president. In summary: many books have been turned into musicals, but not every musical is a book musical⦠which begs the question: how many different types of musicals are there? What Is a Book Musical, Exactly? So far, weâve established that books become musicals and weâre still intrigued by the idea that musicals have books.By that, we donât mean that of musicals are written and, from those productions, a book is compiled even though that is sometimes the case.As an example: Mamma Mia, How Can I Resist You?, by Judy Cramer, tells the story of how ABBAâs songs came to be one of the most successful musicals to ever hit the stage.A book musical is different than that, even.Book musicals have three distinct components and certain characteristics to define them.Weâll start by exploring them and we challenge you to mentally review the musicals youâve seen to determine if they are book musicals or a different type of musical. For a theatre company, working from a book provides several advantages Image by WikimediaImages from PixabayCharacteristicsMost musicals start out with the same three components: music, lyrics and a script. However, a book musical follows an orderly progression from beginning to end⦠unlike concept musicals, which presents its story in fragments relevant to the theme or moral of the story. The script details the performersâ lines and stage directions; it may also include song lyrics. Scripts may contain notes about character development and perhaps a bit of backstory so that the performers can get some ideas about how best to play their role.As opposed to other types of musicals, the songs in a book musical are integral to the story. They may be sung to heighten the dramatic intensity of the situation, to a romantic partner as a way to convey deep emotion or as a duet â" One Hand, One Heart in West Side Story comes to mind as a great example of such.Song lyrics help to advance the story rather than give a break from it.Such songs contrast with those from musicals like Cher Show, an American musical that details the life and songs of that remarkable performer. Needless to say, the score for that show incorporates her many hit songs rather than new songs written specifically for the show. Now, letâs look closer at each of the facets all book musicals have in common. The LibrettoIn Italian, âlibrettoâ means âlittle bookâ.Usually, when the script includes the showâs song lyrics, it is referred to as a libretto. Many theatrical branches use librettos: operas and operettas; cantatas and oratorio. Librettos even feature in religious practices such as requiems.Productions tend to run more smoothly from a libretto because they include stage directions. And, because the songs are integral to the story â" indeed, they form a part of the story, it helps the performers get a sense of continuity when lyrics are included within the dialogue. In a book musical, mos t (if not all) the characters are all introduced and the plot is laid out in the first act.The first act usually runs longer than the second and, generally, the complication or conflict â" the crux of the story, will be revealed just before intermission. Also, learn to distinguish the characteristics of musical revuesâ¦The MusicMusic and lyrics together are called the score.A score may include music played softly during charactersâ conversational interludes as well as background music for action scenes, if any. It may even include orchestrations to be played during the intermission. It is quite common for one person to write the music and another the lyrics; Gilbert and Sullivan were just such a writing team. The former wrote the libretti while the latter composed the music.Across the pond, Rodgers and Hammerstein were an equally prolific creative team; Richard Rodgers composed the music and Oscar Hammerstein wrote lines and lyrics. While collaborations are common in musical theate r, some composers write their showsâ music and lyrics alone. An excellent, modern-day example of such is Lin-Manuel Miranda, author/composer of Hamilton. In a book musical, most of the songs are sung in the first act and reprised in the second, sometimes with different lyrics. These second-act tunes may be sung at a different tempo, by a chorus rather than the character who sang it first; they may even have different lyrics while the music remains the same. Occasionally, a new song and dance may be added.Do you know of a rock musical that had music written especially for the show? The LyricsGive âem the ole razzle-dazzle⦠Billy Flynn, ChicagoIn some musicals, songs are meant as an aside to the audience, giving us a peek into the charactersâ thoughts or motivations. By contrast, song lyrics in book musicals have a direct import on the story itself.Edelweiss, poignantly sung by the von Trapp family just before leaving Austria forever is the perfect case in point.Their audience in cludes Nazi officials, the very regime Captain von Trapp reviles, which he effectively demonstrates when he joins his son in singing about the pure, white flower that will forever symbolise his beloved Austria. So effective was this ballad that many fans of The Sound of Music believed it was Austriaâs national anthem â" or, at least a traditional folk song when, in fact, it was written by American lyricist Oscar Hammerstein, who had no ties to Austria.Find out how film musicals brought this type of entertainment to the masses⦠Many Broadway productions are based on classic tales published centuries ago Image by Dariusz Sankowski from PixabayThe Most Popular Book MusicalsDoes all of this leave you scratching your head, wondering which Broadway musicals â" or any show put on in any theatre in New York or London are actually book musicals? You might argue that every musical is a book musical; donât they all have to have a script? To an extent, you are correct but, today, a new musical tends to eschew books altogether; sometimes, actorsâ lines are sung or rapped rather than recited. In that sense, musical theatre is edging ever closer to opera. That is why classic titles are generally considered true book musicals. Among the best musical fare to play on Broadway are:Guys and Dolls: book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows; score by Frank LoesserOklahoma!: book by Oscar Hammerstein; score by Richard RodgersFiddler on the Roof: book by Joseph Stein, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, music by Jerry BockWest Side Story: boo k by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen SondheimShowboat: book by Oscar Hammerstein, music by Jerome KernAnother point to keep in mind: many Broadway shows can be classified in several different ways. For instance, a jukebox musical such as Mamma Mia may also be considered a musical comedy. The musical Beauty and the Beast, adapted from the Disney movie, could be considered a book musical although its genesis was the musical film. The question is: do you need to know whether the Broadway production you want to buy tickets for is a book musical or a concept musical?Probably not, but understanding how such productions are classified helps you to understand musical theatre as a whole: past, present and future.Go ahead and enjoy all of the revivals and new performances you want!

Sometimes, its just simpler to live in a world where I cant because I have to be up early for work, or my body just doesnt go for exercise in the morning. Ask yourself, is that really the reason youre not doing these things? Are you looking for a convenient out? Test your boundaries and you might find out that once you arrive at that social event youve been avoiding, youre so happy you got there. Do Something Fun, Spontaneously Travelers often talk about the rush that comes when they purchase a set of plane tickets. Youre committed, the trip is happening! Maybe you dont start with a trip overseas, you could begin by taking a vacation to a nearby getaway or choosing to finally get out that camera that was always supposed to be your hobby and going for a walk in the park. It doesnt really matter what you do, harnessing the idea that you can do something thats not to plan and enjoy it is where the real value lies. Remove Distractions You probably know that you have time-sucking habits that occupy hours of each day. The favorite cellphone game that you fire up after work, the television series that you cant stop binge-watching but know you should. Challenge yourself to take that time and apply it towards completing a project or learning a new skill. You might be surprised and how you dont miss your old time wasters. You might actually feel quite accomplished. Be Honest With Yourself About What You Want to Do As an introvert, it can be easy to obsess over what other people think. For example, that destination wedding thats going to break the bank. All your friends are going and its just not for you. If its giving you anxiety, have the confidence to act on your feelings. Thats not to say you should just feel comfortable quitting on things, either. Pick a day, mark it on your calendar and tell yourself Im going to try something new. Maybe its a baseball game, maybe its trying a new restaurant. Do something, relax and enjoy yourself. Dont Be Afraid To Talk about Your Introversion The things that youve been shy about doing, have you ever tried them? Think of the last time you had a genuinely negative experience, was it really because you chose to go out or be social? Maybe its time to reach out to your friends and let them know you want to come out, but its difficult. If they understand what youre going through, the experience will be more relatable for you and them. People who care about you will go out of their way to understand how they can improve your experience. Dont Expect To Become a Socialite Overnight At first, this is all probably going to be awkward. Keep working at it. Its going to take some repetition to break down the part of you that wants to hesitate and there will always be a part of you thats introverted. Getting comfortable being social doesnt mean reinventing yourself as a person, mental health experts will attest that your focus isnt so much outright change as becoming comfortable with the feeling of being yourself and allowing some flexibility instead of holding back.
